FIRST EDITION FIRST STATE Two volumes (complete), 8vo. Volume I: frontispiece + engraved title + [iii] + vi-viii + + [1]-382 pp. Volume II (1859): frontispiece + Vignette Title + [v] + vi-viii + [1]-376 pp. Profusely illustrated with fronstispieces, title vignettes, engraved plates and numerous engravings in the text, finely bound in nineteenth century half calf over marbled boards, spines in compartments, raised bands decorated in gilt and blind, morocco labels, speckled edges. First state with “actresses” for “ancestresses” on p207 line 33, and chapters 47 and 48 misnumbered. Overall condition Some of the plates with light spotting as usual, spine of volume I slightly worn and with the label chipped, an excellent set. Approx. 8½ x 5¾ inches.
